My only caveat: French. He has pretty much the perfect resume for the LPC right now & his wife is Acadian and his kids go to French school - given this, his French was strangely weak in 2006. For a guy from a political family who's been important in Ontario politics since 1996, it was a bit odd his French was inadequate in 2006, though it improved through the leadership campaign. If he now speaks at least Harper-level French, as he should, given he could have been practising at home, he might become my early favourite.

Dryden & Kennedy were the only 2006 candidates to uphold the correct & coherent positions against the Cons ridiculous Nation Resolution - Dion's position was also coherent, if you had followed his thinking over the years, but a touch naive, in thinking a distinction between "nation" in a sociological vs. political sense could be maintained. Dion, of course, had been brave & smart as usual in opposing the LPC-Q Ignatieff-inspired nation resolution which started the whole sorry mess. And suffered the most disgraceful behaviour from Liberal Iggiots since the Martin mob's 1990 "vendu" epithets vs. Chrétien. It was then I decided I was in this fight for good.

From all I'd heard, I'd given up hope Kennedy would run, despite the fact the zeitgeist favours him more now than ever. In a time of Obama, Change, Youth & Renewal, with the LPC needing profound restructuring, of an importance it will take a leader who can commit himself to the project for a while, and needing a leader who can match and project the zeitgeist, Kennedy's Manitoba-Alberta roots, Ontario recognition, and through his wife, Atlantic-Francophone appeal could be perfect. He was loyal to McGuinty & loyal to Dion. He was a good minister. He is handsome & telegenic. Given the influence of US culture, having Kennedy as a name and change-renewal as a slogan is useful. He could put every riding in the country in play. Except...

He needs to be able to speak decent French. At least as well as Harper. Otherwise, Dion's Quebec gains could be lost & the very raison d'être of the Libs could be over. If he can, then he could further consolidate the hardcore federalist vote, as Dion would have, and get us back to 30%. There's only so much room to grow in QC, with the Bloc, soft-nationalist CPC and vote-wasting NDP & Greens. Iggy's slight 39% plurality of QC support (Dion 30%, Rae 25%) at the last convention was almost all from riding associations in areas the LPC has no chance of winning seats - soft-nationalist/separatist areas where spouting nation nonsense will get you a pat on the head but at election-time the voters are going Bloc or CPC. It's understandable the riding associations from these areas, seeing the local picture and wanting to increase their scores, would want the LPC to become more soft-nationalist. But not only is it contrary to Liberal Canadian values, it's bad politics. They may look at the trees, but we've got to see the forest. We can regain seats in West Quebec, the Townships & Greater Montreal a lot easier than anywhere else. And the key in these areas, as in Ontario & across the country, is to get liberals to vote Liberal. And in Quebec, that means being proud forthright socially-minded federalists, consolidating the hardcore federalist vote, which means getting the apathetic out and the disenchanted back from the NDP & Greens. With 5-way races in QC, it doesn't take a lot of extra votes to pick up extra seats. A third of Quebeckers are hard-core federalists: get them back first, and pick up seats. Once that's consolidated, we can think about winning in Rimouski, one day. And of course, proud federalism in QC is also a big seller in the ROC, distinguishing us from the Cons. Never forget, our brand is a strong united Canada. We abandon it to the Cons at our peril.
