If the LPC Chooses Life, Trudeau Must Be Leader

If the LPC chooses Life, then Justin Trudeau is the only possible leader. Arguing for Canada in Quebec, for the Macdonald to Trudeau vision, against the media consensus, but speaking to the people's unconsciously profound beliefs, will be difficult, given all the lost years. Only a French Canadian can do it, and only one who actually believes in it. Only Justin Trudeau can do it. And, if the LPC is to survive, the Leader must also genuinely believe in the Green Shift, which, knowing Trudeau's background, he does. And as it will require much discussion, much argument, much pedagogy, his teacher background will stand him in good stead. And the Leader must be able to swim in the shallow waters of modernity's media culture, a skill Justin Trudeau has mastered. It will be a heavy task for all of us, fighting for Canada and the future, if we choose life, but for the leader most of all. It needs someone with the energy and idealism to do it for the next four years, and years and years after that. Justin Trudeau has now been and MP for two and a half years. He is younger and more inexperienced than he or anyone would have wished, for such a responsibility. But only he can carry it, and he has four years to learn the job. It is a long-term investment, and he has the qualities needed, for the long haul. He will all our help and support, and patience over the next decade, as he will make mistakes. But he has all the talent for the job. If he has the courage and endurance to do it.

He is not Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Justin Trudeau is not an intellectual, though he is much smarter and wiser than people realise. But when people dismiss him as not his father's equal (what a standard!), I am always struck by how obtuse they are. Justin Trudeau is much more akin to our generation's Chrétien and Charest. His father was very impressive, but Charest and Chrétien were and are much superior politician politicians, high and low, than Pierre Trudeau ever was. When you look at Justin Trudeau, do not say to yourself "he's no Pierre Trudeau". Look closer, think deeper, and see that for our time, he is our age's Chrétien or Charest. And having as our leader a young vibrant 21st century version of Chrétien, of Charest, is exactly what we need. It is far more than anyone else has.

If the LPC is to live, it is for Canada and the future. The spokesperson must embody those qualities, and have the political skills to achieve those ends through the appropriate means. Justin Trudeau is not Pierre Trudeau. He is something far better, for who we are and where we are. He is a 21st century Jean Chrétien.
