Fiery Chrétien rallies Liberal faithful I'll just add that when the Martinites were being imbecilic in trying to force him out early, in 2002 I think, I was the only person in my entire circle of acquaintances to argue "contre vents et marées", that he needed to stay, that Martin, for all his fine qualities (and he's a good man, who actually did a lot of good as PM as well as Finance Minister and had many incredibly good things ready to go, if not for NDP in 2005-2006), was not ready to take over when he did. Everyone, media, politicos, everyone, had adopted the conventional wisdom, "he's yesterday's man, blah blah, etc.", wrong as usual. So it's not all Martin's fault, everyone, with a few notable exceptions, was wrong. Always underrated, JC. Like Ron Francis, or Brian Trottier, everyone knows he's underrated, but people don't realise just how much. Smart, smart guy. One of the very few I rate very highly, even if I disagree with him on human rights vs. trade, short-term vs. long-term foreign policy calculation.
As Chrétien often noted, in his pomp, Canada is remarkably easy to govern..of course it helps to understand the country, and its constraints, USA, QC, etc.. But just be smart, and true*, like Chrétien, and all will be well. Be full of Mulroneyian BS like Layton, or hate the country like Harper, and easy enough to wreck things, impoverishing and dividing Canadians. It`s weird, as often noted, the vast majority of Canadians, and a good majority of Quebeckers (though ces derniers would not consciously admit) agree with Trudeau-Chrétien vision, which should be no surprise, as it corresponds to political history of Canada, including Quebec. Why are all our current leaders so stupid about this basic basic stuff? I know why Harper is - hates Canada as is and wants to change it - and Layton is a just another delusional Mulroneyite, reflecting his background, but no-one else has an excuse. Stand up for Canada, dammit. Or others will.
* Yes, true. As Lawrence Martin noted, Chrétien's excesses were result of pressing problems or attacks on himself, LPC, Canada. He was remarkably decentralised with ministers, actually.

I have met Jean Chretien a number of times when he was Federal Minister of Indian Affairs and I was with Saskatchewan Social Services. He is a good man. Mr. Chretien's friendship with Roy Romanow is legendary. It is always pleasing to me when a Liberal and a New Democrat can reach across the divide (with mutual respect) and work towards what both believe in. Some are not able to bridge the divide, but it certainly is to the benefit of the nation when Libs and New Dems acknowledge that the things that tie us together are stronger than the things that would tear the nation apart.
